What are the required fields on this Configure VAT screen and what do they mean?

Last updated on May 18, 2026

Short Answer: Required fields are: 1) 'Header row' — which row has your column names; 2) 'Transaction date' — which column holds dates; 3) 'Date format' — order of day/month/year; 4) 'Description / Narration' — columns used for description; 5) 'Tax amount' — column with tax values.

PreRequisites

  1. The 'Configure VAT / sales tax statement' dialog is open and visible.

Steps

  1. Locate the 'Required fields' list on the right side of the dialog; it lists items 1 through 5.
You see these labels: '1. Header row', '2. Transaction date', '3. Date format', '4. Description / Narration', '5. Tax amount'.

  2. Confirm each required field is set to the column or values that correspond to your file e.g., 'Header row' = 1, 'Transaction date' = Return Date, 'Tax amount' = Gross Amount GBP.
All required fields are mapped correctly for reconciliation.

Troubleshooting

  1. One of the required fields is missing or empty.
LikelyCause: You have not selected a mapping for that required field.
Action: Map the missing field using the controls in the 'Required fields' panel before clicking 'Continue'.
